I had so much fun yesterday with my class. Granted we were all a little nervous and a bit quiet to start because we didn't know each other yet. Lesson 1 also had a lot of talking and I was getting a little afraid that it was too much information and not enough cooking, but we had to talk about safety and fractions.
Fractions tripped us all up a bit. Some of the younger students had not had much practice with fractions yet, and I just know it. I didn't think far enough about how to teach math because I was just teaching cooking. Now I know that you never really teach just one thing. So, I am preparing a little better for the second group that will come tomorrow. Then I can review fractions with group one next week as well. It is really funny because I don't even think about halving, doubling, tripling or quadrupling fractions anymore...at least not the common ones you see when cooking. :)
The students had a great time cracking eggs and practicing separating the yolk from the egg white. My guess is that was their favorite part because that is when they really woke up and started laughing. Everyone had a chance to add ingredients and practice doubling a recipe as we made homemade waffles. They each cooked their own and everyone agreed they were delicious!
I didn't take pics, because I couldn't find my camera. But I will get some tomorrow.
Oh, and I have been getting out and running more, finally getting back into the groove. Monday I did 4 miles in 38 minutes! I am so proud of that time. I was really pushing myself though and I'm sure anyone who saw me thought I was about to collapse from lack of air by mile 3. Haha! For the rest of the week I'm slowing back down, but it was good to see where I was speed wise too.
