I made homemade sauce for my murder mystery lasagna. I think it was a hit. My hubby thinks it was one of the best lasagnas yet. It was easy to do too.

* 1 jar of my friend Laura's home grown and canned tomatoes, juice and all
* 1-8 ounce can tomato paste
* 2 tablespoons sugar
* 1 teaspoon Oregano
* 1 teaspoon Basil
* 1/2 teaspoon Thyme
* 2 cloves garlic
* 1/4 cup diced onion (feel free to use more)
* 1/2 a large green bell pepper, diced (feel free to use more)
* 1/2 pound extra lean ground beef (or ground turkey)
* 1/2 pound sausage
* salt and pepper to taste

Saute the onion, garlic and bell pepper in olive oil.

You can see that the onion is becoming soft and translucent and the garlic is lightly browned.

Add the tomatoes, paste, and seasonings

I let it it simmer for an hour and a half.

I browned the ground beef and sausage (I actually sprinkled some paprika on it too).

Add it to the tomato sauce. I let it simmer for another 2 hours. You don't have to cook it that long, but it allows the flavors time to blend really well before adding it to the lasagna or spaghetti.
